ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE   is  the Art of Living, naturally.

" . . . for Nature does not work in parts; she treats everything as a whole."  (FM Alexander, 1906)

What do I learn at Alexander Technique Lessons?

Basically you learn to move naturally, according to your human design. This means less pain and more ease.

A short video from Youtube about what the Alexander technique can do for you.

Your body inherently knows what it needs and wants. When you listen and use your body with conscious awareness you become in control of your very powerful being. The more time you spend practicing the Alexander Technique, the deeper your learning about yourself - your favourite subject. Here is a link to a Youtube video on First Impressions of an Alexander Technique Lesson.

Personal testimonials from individuals learning the Alexander Technique with Fiona

"...I not only really enjoyed, but hugely benefited from the course with you. Found it hugely liberating - not only physically...     I would normally run a mile from any 'group' class - especially concerning the things we were dealing with. But I found your teaching approach terrific - with an honesty and truth -'say it as it is' way... a 'no bullshit' woman. Thanks hugely - your own energy in what you're doing is positively infectious."

"Thank you for the lovely introduction to the Alexander Technique and the ongoing gentle persuasion toward practice, which seemed to become a natural way of being without effort. "

How do I learn the Alexander Technique?

There are many ways to learn. You can do what Alexander did and spend many years dedicated to observing yourself by way of mirror. You can read information freely available on the world wide web, or in the many books written on the subject. Or you can find an Alexander Technique Teacher. I find we all need a little help and guidance. Could you learn to play a musical instrument by yourself? Well consider your body as an instrument you would like to play better.

Private Lessons

This is the traditional and most effective way to learn. Everyone is unique - with their own shape, muscle tensions, habits, thoughts, beliefs and emotions. Each lesson takes it's own shape according to the client, or should I say student. Over a course of lessons we will look at how you use your body. From rest through to common day activities and movements - sitting, standing, walking, breathing, singing, dancing, gardening, running, eating, hoovering, thinking, driving, shopping, golfing. . .

FM Alexander would initially see his students daily until a significant change had occurred and then ease out to bi-weekly, fortnightly, etc. and he believed the student to be in conscious control of their whole mechanism. You may feel you have benefited greatly from 10 lessons or  you may decide to follow this path and involve this work as maintaining a healthy life style. This work is all about choice and ultimately the choice is yours.

Lessons are conducted fully clothed. You may be asked to remove your shoes. Please be mindful that movement is often involved so you may wish to wear loose comfortable clothing so as to allow freedom and comfort.

Group work

Group work can be a course of classes over weeks or intensive workshops. We start by looking at the body's design, how we use it and then evolve into movement - sitting, standing, walking and breathing. Everyone will experience hands-on and their body in a new place while learning to observe within the group. While every individual is different, some may see similarities in shape or use and functioning  that helps them learn cognitively from another. The group dynamic is an interesting way to learn and ideal for people who are curious about the Alexander Technique. The workshop has become a great time for people to retouch and relearn about their bodies and is sometimes repeated as a retreat.

If you have a group of people interested in a particular subject or movement, we can organise a workshop to suit you. Email me now with your ideas.

 THE WORKPLACE

These days it is becoming popular in industry, and the corporate world, to invest in their staff. Microsoft were voted as the best company to work for (Feb 09) highlighting how important they value those who are running the company, ie the staff.  The Alexander technique is an obvious stress preventative model for your firm to choose. Train your workforce to manage their bodies healthily, alongside your ergonomic investment.  How we use our living, breathing bodies during long periods of limited action is directly related to cases of back pain, neck tension and repetitive strain. Learning how to improve coordination in these situations effects well-being and performance. It is proved that employees who feel valued at work, have greater loyalty to the firm, career longevity, and produce with more quality with less absenteeism.
